HISTORY OF GAM

FREE_Aceh Movement, or GAM is an organization (which is considered separatists) who has a purpose that Aceh, which is the area that was renamed the Aceh separated from the Republic of Indonesia. The conflict between the Indonesian government and GAM differences caused this desire has been ongoing since the fall of 1976 and led to nearly 15,000 people. This movement is also known as the Aceh Sumatra National Liberation Front (ASNLF). GAM led by Hasan di Tiro for nearly three decades living in Sweden and Swedish citizenship. On June 2, 2010, he obtained Indonesian citizenship, just a day before he died in Banda Aceh.

On December 4, 1976 initiator Aceh Movement Hasan di Tiro and some of his followers issued a statement of opposition to the government of Indonesia that took place in the hills in the region Halimon Pidie district. Beginning of the establishment of the GAM official name used is AM, the Free Aceh. By the Indonesian government in the period 1980-1990 with the name of the movement is said to GPK-AM. Repressive armed resistance movement gets a harsh welcome from the Indonesian central government finally held a military operation in the province of Aceh, known as DOM (Military Operations Area) in the latter half of the 80s to the late 90s, the operation has made the PM forced to continue his struggle activists from the exile. The conflict between the Indonesian government and GAM continues to implement the government's military emergency status in Aceh in 2003, after going through some of the dialogical process that failed to reach an agreement between the government solution with GAM activists RI. The conflict has more or less suppress armed activities conducted by GAM, GAM many activists who fled to other regions of Aceh and overseas. Earthquake and tsunami on December 26, 2004 has forced the warring parties to return to the negotiating table for the initiation and mediation by international parties.

On February 27, 2005, GAM and the Indonesian government started negotiations stage in Vantaa, Finland. Former Finnish president Marti Ahtisaari acted as a facilitator.


On July 17, 2005, after negotiations for 25 days, Indonesian negotiating team managed to reach a peace agreement with GAM in Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland. The Memorandum of Understanding peace held on 15 August 2005 peace process subsequently monitored by a team called the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) consisting of five ASEAN countries and some countries within the European Union. Among the important point is that the Indonesian government will also facilitate the establishment of local political parties in Aceh and granting amnesty for GAM members.

The entire weapon reaches 840 GAM handed over to the AMM completed on December 19, 2005, then on December 27, through the GAM military spokesman, Sofyan Dawood, stating that they have disbanded military wing formally.
